The year is 2084. After the end of the European Civil War, a company called Memorize created Sensen, an implant that allows people to share and store their memories and sensations. Civilians immediately flocked towards the new technology, unaware that Memorize had a hidden agenda; to utilize this dangerous technology in order to silently manipulate and control the users. Those who stand up and fight against this evil corporation are known as “errorists.”

Remember Me

Developed by Dontnod / Published by Capcom

Available on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Reviewed on the Xbox 360.

In Capcom and Dontnod’s Remember Me, players take on the role of Nilin, a former memory hunter and errorist whose memory has been wiped. After narrowly avoiding her death with the help of a mysterious individual named Edge, Nilin must use her innate skills and memories to get to the bottom of things and find out the truth behind Memorize and the errorists.

The story in Remember Me is one of the strong points of the game, expertly weaving a tale full of high-tech mystery and sabotage. While Nilin starts out the game as a blank slate, she soon develops into an attractive, strong, female character that oozes personality and substance. Other characters in the game are well rounded too, lending a cinematic quality to the title.

The setting in Remember Me is just as important as the large cast of characters. Neo-Paris is a beautiful cyberpunk world teeming with life, both organic and artificial. From the desolate and filthy slums filled with debris, broken steel and mutated humanoids called leapers, to the elaborate architecture of the cities full of servant robots and rich folk, the world presented in the game is full of gorgeous detail and personality. Walking through a futuristic Paris and observing it with an augmented heads-up display that feeds information about your surroundings is also fantastic.

The environments are gorgeous in this game. Look at all that detail!

Remember Me is a third-person action adventure game that plays similarly to other titles in the genre. It is composed of sections where Nilin must traverse the environment by jumping and climbing across buildings and streets, while combat takes place in open sections against multiple enemies. Both elements are very similar to games like the Assassin’s Creed franchise and Rocksteady’s Batman series, but while these gameplay features worked flawlessly in those games, in Remember Me they are poorly executed. Climbing and traversing the environment in Remember Me is well-done, but it ends up feeling too linear and forced. Most of the time there’s only one ledge to grab onto, so the path to your next destination is always straightforward. Movement on the ground also feels stiff, causing Nilin to jerk around more often than running smoothly, which is a minor annoyance.

Combat could’ve worked if it had a little more tweaking.

Combat is another place where Remember Me is flawed. Clearly inspired by the Batman series, the game has Nilin leaping from one foe to the next, attempting to maintain a combo while backflipping and cartwheeling away from enemy attacks. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work as well as it should. Inputting commands feels slow and laggy, and leaping away from danger is somewhat difficult, especially if you are getting attacked by enemies that are frequently offscreen. Nilin’s attack options are also limited by the number of Pressens (or attacks) she has, so you’ll have to get used to repeating the same combo strings over and over again just to win long and often dragged-on battles. Later on in the game, Nilin will gain access to new combos, weapon add-ons, and pressens that grant her bonuses, like healing lost health or recharging special abilities known as S-Pressens, but these don’t really help improve the uninspiring combat system.

Thankfully, Remember Me excels in other areas, mainly in the memory stealing and remixing. Using a tool called the hunt glove, Nilin can either extract memories from certain individuals or remix them to transform a target’s memory. The former is fairly straightforward, as it usually involves Nilin closely following a spectral version of the target to make her way across heavily protected locations and learning passwords to unlock paths. The latter however, is where this game really shines.

Remixing people’s memories is the best part of the game.

When remixing a target’s memory, an in-game cutscene plays out showing how a particular event occurred in the targets mind. Once it is completed, players must then rewind the memory and alter the outcome by taking advantage of memory glitches, small errors in the memory that distort and flicker when passed over. By selecting and manipulating these glitches, players can change the outcome in a number of ways, some positive and some negative. The key to success lies in using the correct glitches in sequence, and finding this sequence is a very entertaining experience that will have you raving for days.

Poor combat and platforming aside, Dontnod’s Remember Me is a fine action/adventure experience full of great moments, a complex and rich setting and story, and some truly unique gameplay that’ll make you want to experience it again and again. While it’s not a perfect experience, for first-time developers Dontnod it’s a step in the right direction.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10 stars 7.5/10

In this day and age, zombies pretty much rule everything. There are hundreds of books, films, games and even music dedicated to the shambling undead. A new game about these fascinating, walking corpses isn’t going to change the world, right?

Enter Undead Labs with their newest title State of Decay, which is now available for Xbox Live and will be coming soon to PC. It’s an open-world survival horror game with permadeath, a deep scavenging and upgrade system and plenty of zombies to hack and slash through. Is it any good though?

Initial impressions of the title are pretty great. You start the game as young man named Marcus Campbell who is a survivor of a massive zombie attack. Star a friend, both venture out into a world that is has more dead people than living.

Gameplay is handled from a third-person perspective, tasking players to go out into the open world and complete missions in a large map. Players can run, crouch and jump to safety, and can fend off zombies with shove attacks or use scavenged weapons like melee weapons and firearms. Combat plays out in typical fashion, with players bashing and shooting zombies down until they’re dead. Downed zombies can also be quickly dispatched with a wicked-looking finisher. Combat in general is pretty fun and gruesome, though it’s somewhat simplistic and can get repetitive.

State of Decay does nail the whole ‘survival’ element, outperforming other games in the genre. After reaching high points in the map like watchtowers and rooftops, players can quickly scan through their surroundings and pick out which places are searchable, working vehicles, and dangerous zombie hordes that roam the streets.

Once locations are scanned over, players can then head out and scavenge the places, getting new weapons and health items, and materials that are used to rebuild your homebase or build new stations.

Speaking of home bases, players will be in charge of them once they arrive. The home base houses other survivors that sleep and eat there, so players must scavenge abandoned towns for food, construction materials, weapons, medicine and more to keep these people in tip-top shape. These elements are consumed daily in real-time, so players have to constantly be on top of this to keep the residents happy, while also using these to create or upgrade stations, request other survivors to scavenge supplies that you’ve previously found, and purchase new gear. It’s a sim-like gameplay mechanic that really makes the game feel like an authentic zombie survival game, and it’s pretty great.

Stay tuned for the full review of State of Decay in the next few days.

Who could have saw this coming? I sure didn’t. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Techland have unleashed the first trailer for their free-running/zombie bashing hybrid Dying Light, and it looks pretty great.

While no gameplay is shown in this roller-coaster of a trailer, we can take some glimpses of what’s in store for us coming release day. Cool free-running moves, multiplayer, and crazy moddleable weapons. If this game successfully combines the thrill of hopping from building to building from games like Mirror’s Edge with the RPG elements of Dead Island, I am sold.

Over 200 characters from 27 games. That’s a huge amount of people to play with in Namco Bandai’s upcoming RPG crossover Project X Zone. Teaming up with Capcom and Sega, Namco is bringing some of the world’s most recognizable characters to the Nintendo 3DS for some turn-based action.

What is Project X Zone? It’s turn-based roleplaying at its finest. Combining the depth of turn-based combat with a deep attack system that imitates fighting games, this game really looks like it could be a blast.

To celebrate the announcement, we’ve brought you a new trailer to check out how cool this game really is. It’s one thing to include a whole bunch of characters in one game, but to have them each deal out awesome attacks and outfit them with crazy animations? Now that’s awesome!

Project X Zone will be available on the Nintendo 3DS this month, on June 25. The first of two demos is out now on the eShop, so I highly recommend you check it out.

Konami’s excellent pre-E3 presentation aired earlier today, but if you missed it, don’t fret; we’ve got you covered.

Among the highlights of the show was the reveal of Pro Evolution Soccer 2014, designed with Kojima Productions’ FOX Engine, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, with the reveal of Keifer Sutherland as Snake, and an all-new trailer for MercurySteam’s upcoming Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. It’s all good (and occasionally crazy) stuff, and you can check it out in its entirety below:

Don’t feel like sitting through the presentation and just want to jump straight to the juicy stuff? You can do that too.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (GDC 2013):

Pretty awesome stuff, right? And Keifer Sutherland as Snake? I don’t know… Kojima is known for trolling his fans. We’ll know the truth when the game finally comes out, or maybe at E3. Who knows?

Well, maybe being a ghost isn’t the best idea, but Square Enix’s upcoming thriller Murdered: Soul Suspect sure knows how to make it look fun.

In the reveal trailer for the game we get to take a look at the overall plot of the game and some gameplay to boot. Murdered by a mysterious individual, detective Ronan O’Conner wakes up as a ghost and must find out the identity of his killer in order to move on. However, he’s stuck in the realm of Dusk (where dead people reside) ,so he’ll have to navigate the town of Salem, Massachusetts and read minds, interrogate ghosts, and battle evil spirits. All in a day’s work, right?

The plot looks pretty fun and gameplay might be a refreshing breath of air. Hopefully it isn’t too similar to games like RE4 or Shadow of the Damned though, because The Evil Within might be some competition.

Murdered: Soul Suspect will be available sometime early 2014 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
